Why do I need x-rays? Are they safe?
At Red Rock Family Dentistry, we balance your safety and the benefit of taking dental x-rays. We use digital x-rays, which limits the amount of radiation to which you are exposed.
The routine x-rays we take expose you to less radiation than one day of natural background radiation. We follow the ADA (American Dental Association) guidelines for x-rays. We take x-rays because they allow us to see decay and other abnormalities that we would otherwise not be able to detect. By the time a cavity can be detected by just looking in your mouth, oftentimes the cavity is so large that invasive, expensive dental treatment is needed to save the tooth.
We also have a panoramic x-ray to detect problems like abnormalities in the jaw or wisdom teeth that need to be extracted.
In short, the digital x-rays that we use at Red Rock Family Dentistry are safe and necessary to provide the standard of care that the board of dentistry requires.
