How Will I Replace a Missing Tooth?
A common worry of patients after having a tooth removed is how to replace it. Fortunately, with modern dentistry, there are multiple options for replacing teeth.
One option of tooth replacement is to have an implant placed to replace the tooth. A dental implant is made of titanium, which is a very biocompatible material used in many other surgical procedures like knee replacements.
The titanium implant acts like the root of a tooth. The first step is having a dental implant placed by a dental specialist. At Red Rock Family Dentistry, we refer our patients to specialists like oral surgeons or periodontists who have extra training in the field of implant dentistry.
After a healing period, which gives time for the implant to stabilize, you will return to our office to have a crown made on top of the implant. We simply take an impression of the implant, and a crown is custom made and fit to the implant. Crowns can be made from a variety of materials, from gold to porcelain, which can be matched to the shade of your other teeth.
A bridge is a method of replacing a tooth or multiple teeth with artificial teeth that attach to crowns on either side of the space. They can be made from a variety of materials, including gold, porcelain, and metal alloys or a combination of these materials.
Bridges are made by shaping the teeth on either side of a space for crowns. We then take an impression, which we use to make a custom bridge to fit your teeth. We also look at the shade of the other teeth in your mouth so that the color will match and look natural in your smile.
Another option for replacing teeth is to have a partial denture made. Partial dentures can be made from metal or acrylic material, or a combination of these. They are held in place by support from your other teeth. They can be made to match your gum tissue and the shade of your other teeth so that they blend in and look natural.
Partial dentures are made by taking an impression of your teeth. Sometimes it is necessary to gently re-shape the supporting teeth to improve the fit. This is sometimes done for retention of the partial so it does not fall out or move while you are talking or eating.
At Red Rock Family Dentistry, we like to involve you in the decision making process when it comes to your teeth. We feel that the most important thing is knowing all of your options and making an informed decision.
